James Zillinger

Councilmember James Zillinger was born on December 1, 1997, in Moscow, Idaho, and grew up in various towns in the state, including Troy, Moscow, Idaho Falls, and Roberts. As a child, James had an adventurous spirit, dreaming of becoming an astronaut, demolitionist, or nuclear engineer. His first jobs included being a ranch hand, painter, and mower, providing him with a strong work ethic from a young age. He developed a love for the outdoors, particularly for hiking and duck identification, and enjoyed traveling to destinations such as Yellowpine, ID, Chattanooga, TN, and Omaha, NE.

James’s educational journey took him to the University of Idaho, where he earned a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering between 2016 and 2023. During his time at university, he participated in extracurricular activities such as the marching band and professional organizations like the American Nuclear Society and Material Advantage. He also worked as an electrochemistry lab research assistant and a nuclear thermal propulsion research intern, gaining valuable experience in the field. Throughout his education, James learned a lesson that has stayed with him: “Trust the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

Professionally, James is a Nuclear Fuels Research and Development Engineer. He has made significant contributions to his field, publishing several scientific journal and conference papers focused on next-generation nuclear fuel development. James’s passion for nuclear science is evident in his involvement in initiatives like nuclear waste recycling and responsible wildland and wildlife management.

In 2021, James moved to Roberts, Idaho, to escape the rising cost of living in Idaho Falls and to pursue his dream of raising alpacas. He and his wife, Melody, married in 2024. Together, they have welcomed a a baby boy into their family.

James continues to contribute to his community by volunteering with the Idaho Falls Rescue Mission. He also has aspirations for his town, accepting an appointment for councilmember in Roberts to help it achieve its full potential as a charming small community. His vision includes improved infrastructure like sidewalks, street lighting, and recreational paths, as well as a revitalized downtown. When asked why he ran accepted the appointment, James explained that he would like to see Roberts reach its maximum potential as a small town, rich in charm and opportunity for its residents.

Though James has not held any other elected positions in Roberts, his leadership in both professional and community spheres speaks to his dedication. With a clear vision for the town's future, James Zillinger is focused on making Roberts a place where families can thrive in a connected and welcoming environment.
